McDonough native A.J. (Buddy) Welch graduates from The Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University in Macon, and joins Ernest Smith under the new firm name, Smith & Welch |

A second office opens in Stockbridge with Mark Brittain joining as Managing Partner. The firm's name changed to Smith, Welch & Brittain. |
| 2001 |

The Garland Law Firm of Jackson (founded in 1905 by William E. Watkins) merges with Smith, Welch & Brittain, and a third office is opened. Byrd Garland, grandson of the founder, is named Managing Partner of the Jackson office. |

The Barnesville office opens with L. Scott Mayfield as Managing Partner. |
